What Is a Gram Stain Test?
A Gram Stain is a quick, low-cost laboratory test that helps identify bacteria in a sample by the way they take up a special dye. The sample, which might be pus, sputum, urine, or fluid, is treated with stains and viewed under a microscope. Bacteria that hold the purple dye are called Gram-positive, while those that turn pink are called Gram-negative. The test also shows the shape and arrangement of the bacteria. This simple split gives the doctor an early clue about what kind of infection is present, often within minutes.
Why Is a Gram Stain Done?

The report describes what was seen under the microscope. For example, "Gram-positive cocci in clusters" points toward one family of bacteria, while "Gram-negative rods" points toward another. A Gram Stain narrows down the possibilities but does not name the exact organism or confirm which antibiotic will work, so it is almost always followed by a culture and sensitivity test for a complete answer.
