A Stool C/S test, short for Stool Culture and Sensitivity, is a lab test that looks for harmful bacteria in your stool (faeces) and identifies exactly which one is causing an infection. A small stool sample is placed in a growth medium so that any disease-causing bacteria can multiply and be recognised. The sensitivity part of the test then checks which antibiotics will work against that organism. It is the most accurate way to find the true cause of a stubborn or serious gut infection, rather than treating it blindly.
Why Is a Stool C/S Test Done?
This test is ordered when someone has diarrhoea that is severe, bloody, or lasting longer than a few days, or when there is fever, stomach cramps, and signs of a bacterial gut infection. It is especially useful after travel, during outbreaks of food or waterborne illness, and in cases that did not improve with initial treatment. In a country where waterborne infections are common, a Stool C/S helps confirm organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella, or certain strains of E. coli, and points the doctor to the right antibiotic when one is genuinely needed.
Understanding Your Stool C/S Result
Results usually take two to three days because the bacteria need time to grow. A "no growth of pathogens" result means no disease-causing bacteria were found, which is normal, since a healthy gut naturally contains many harmless bacteria that the lab does not flag. If a harmful organism grows, the report names it and lists which antibiotics it is sensitive or resistant to. Not every case of diarrhoea needs antibiotics, so your doctor will decide treatment based on the organism, your symptoms, and how unwell you are.
How to Prepare for the Stool C/S Test
- Collect the sample in the clean, sterile container the lab provides. Do not let it touch toilet water or urine.
- Try to give the sample before starting antibiotics, as medicine can prevent the bacteria from growing and give a false result.
- Take the sample to the lab as soon as possible, ideally within an hour or two, or follow the lab's storage advice.
- Tell your doctor about recent travel, medicines, or antacids, as these can be relevant.
