What is the FSH Test?
The FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) test measures the level of FSH in the blood. FSH is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a central role in reproductive health — in women it stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles before ovulation, and in men it supports sperm production. It is a key test for investigating fertility problems and hormonal disorders in both men and women.
Why is the FSH Test Done?
- To investigate infertility in both women and men
- To evaluate irregular or absent menstrual periods in women
- To assess ovarian reserve — how many eggs a woman has remaining
- To diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) alongside LH and other hormones
- To investigate early or delayed puberty in children and adolescents
- To confirm menopause — FSH rises significantly as ovarian function declines
- To evaluate low sperm count or poor sperm quality in men
Normal FSH Levels
| Group | Normal FSH Range |
|---|---|
| Women — follicular phase (Day 1–9) | 3.5 – 12.5 IU/L |
| Women — ovulatory peak (Day 10–14) | 4.7 – 21.5 IU/L |
| Women — luteal phase (Day 15–28) | 1.7 – 7.7 IU/L |
| Post-menopausal women | 25.8 – 134.8 IU/L |
| Adult men | 1.5 – 12.4 IU/L |
In women, the timing of the test within the menstrual cycle is critical — FSH is most informative when measured on days 2–4 of the cycle. A high FSH in a woman of reproductive age suggests diminished ovarian reserve.
How to Prepare for the FSH Test
- No fasting is required
- For women, the test is usually done on day 2, 3, or 4 of the menstrual cycle unless your doctor specifies otherwise
- Inform your doctor about any hormone therapy, fertility medications, or birth control pills you are taking — these significantly affect results
- Avoid heavy exercise and stress before the test
- A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
