Hormone tests like this one usually do not need fasting, but the timing can matter. Some hormones rise and fall through the day, so your doctor may want the sample at a set time, often in the morning. If you take thyroid tablets, hormone medicine, or supplements, ask whether to take them before or after the blood draw. Let the lab know if you are pregnant or where you are in your menstrual cycle, as both change several hormone results.

What is the AMH Test?

The Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) test measures the level of AMH in the blood — a hormone produced directly by the small follicles in a woman's ovaries. Because AMH reflects the number of remaining follicles, it is the most reliable single marker of ovarian reserve. Unlike FSH, AMH remains relatively stable throughout the menstrual cycle, so it can be tested on any day of the month.

Why is the AMH Test Done?

  • To assess ovarian reserve — how many eggs a woman has left, particularly when planning pregnancy or fertility treatment
  • To predict response to IVF (in vitro fertilisation) — low AMH predicts a poor response to ovarian stimulation
  • To investigate premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) in younger women with irregular periods
  • To evaluate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) — AMH is typically elevated in PCOS
  • To monitor ovarian function in women who have undergone chemotherapy or ovarian surgery

Normal AMH Levels

Ovarian Reserve StatusAMH Level
Optimal / HighAbove 3.0 ng/mL
Normal1.0 – 3.0 ng/mL
Low normal0.5 – 1.0 ng/mL
Low / Diminished reserveBelow 0.5 ng/mL
Very low / UndetectableBelow 0.1 ng/mL

AMH declines naturally with age as the egg supply decreases. A low AMH does not mean pregnancy is impossible — it means there are fewer eggs remaining. Interpretation should always be done by a fertility specialist alongside antral follicle count (AFC) on ultrasound.

How to Prepare for the AMH Test

  • No fasting is required
  • The test can be done on any day of the menstrual cycle — unlike FSH, cycle timing does not affect AMH
  • Inform your doctor about any hormonal contraceptives you are using — oral contraceptive pills can temporarily suppress AMH levels
  • A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
  • Results are usually available within 24–48 hours
