What is Prolactin?

Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain. Its primary role is to stimulate breast milk production after childbirth. However, both men and women naturally have small amounts of prolactin in their blood at all times. When prolactin levels rise abnormally — a condition called hyperprolactinemia — it can cause a range of health problems.

Why is the Prolactin Test Done?

Doctors order a prolactin test for several reasons:

  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods in women not caused by pregnancy.
  • Unexplained milky discharge from the breast in women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding (galactorrhea).
  • Infertility in both men and women, as high prolactin can suppress reproductive hormones.
  • Low sex drive or erectile dysfunction in men.
  • Headaches or vision problems that may suggest a pituitary tumor (prolactinoma).
  • To monitor treatment of a known pituitary tumor.

Normal Prolactin Levels

Normal prolactin levels vary by sex and reproductive status:

  • Non-pregnant women: 2–29 ng/mL
  • Pregnant women: 10–209 ng/mL (increases with each trimester)
  • Men: 2–18 ng/mL

Levels significantly above these ranges may indicate a pituitary tumor, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, or be caused by certain medications. Your doctor will interpret the result in context with your symptoms.

How to Prepare for the Test

Prolactin levels fluctuate throughout the day and are highest during sleep and just after waking. For the most accurate result:

  • Have blood drawn 2–3 hours after waking up — ideally between 8 AM and 10 AM.
  • Avoid breast stimulation, heavy exercise, or stress before the test.
  • Inform your doctor about any medications you take, as antipsychotics, antidepressants, and blood pressure medicines can raise prolactin.
  • Fasting is generally not required unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Prolactin Test Price in Bangladesh

Prolactin test prices vary considerably between diagnostic centers in Bangladesh. Government hospitals offer the test at significantly lower rates than private centers. Use MedTestBD to compare current prices from labs near you before booking your test.
