Annual Health Checkup in Bangladesh — Which Tests Should You Get Every Year?

Why Annual Health Checks Matter

Most serious diseases — diabetes, thyroid disorders, high cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, and even some cancers — develop silently for years before causing noticeable symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, the disease is often already at an advanced stage. An annual health checkup allows your doctor to catch these conditions early, when treatment is easiest and most effective.

In Bangladesh, the culture of preventive healthcare is still developing — most people only visit a doctor when they are already unwell. Shifting to a once-a-year checkup habit, even when you feel healthy, is one of the most important investments you can make in your long-term health.

Essential Tests for Every Adult (Age 25+)

Blood Sugar

A Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test checks for diabetes and pre-diabetes. Given that Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of diabetes in South Asia, this is non-negotiable for every adult. If your FBS is borderline, your doctor may also order an HbA1c for a more complete picture of your blood sugar control over the past 3 months.

Complete Blood Count

A CBC screens for anemia, infection, clotting disorders, and blood cancers in a single test. It is inexpensive, quick, and provides a broad health overview. Anemia is extremely common in Bangladesh — especially in women and children — and is often missed without this test.

Lipid Profile

A Lipid Profile measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. High LDL cholesterol causes no symptoms but silently damages arteries, increasing heart attack and stroke risk. Everyone over 35 should get this done annually, and earlier if there is a family history of heart disease.

Liver Function Test

Bangladesh has a high prevalence of Hepatitis B and fatty liver disease. An annual LFT catches liver inflammation or damage early. It is also essential for anyone taking long-term medications.

Kidney Function

A Serum Creatinine and Urine R/E together give a reliable picture of kidney health. Kidney disease is closely linked to diabetes and high blood pressure — both very common in Bangladesh.

Thyroid (TSH)

A TSH test once a year is particularly important for women, as thyroid disorders are significantly more common in women and are frequently missed. Undiagnosed hypothyroidism causes fatigue, weight gain, and fertility problems that are often attributed to other causes.

Urine Routine Examination

A Urine R/E detects urinary tract infections, kidney problems, and early signs of diabetes — all from a simple urine sample. It costs very little and provides useful information across multiple organ systems.

Additional Tests Based on Age and Risk

Age 40 and above — add:

  • ECG — annual heart health baseline
  • Vitamin D — deficiency is extremely common and worsens with age
  • Vitamin B12 — especially for vegetarians and older adults

Women — add:

  • Prolactin and TSH if experiencing menstrual irregularities
  • Blood pressure check every visit

If you have diabetes — add:

  • HbA1c every 3 months
  • Creatinine, Urine R/E, Lipid Profile annually
  • ECG annually

How Much Does an Annual Checkup Cost in Bangladesh?

The core tests — FBS, CBC, Lipid Profile, LFT, Creatinine, Urine R/E, and TSH — together cost between BDT 1,500 and BDT 4,000 depending on which diagnostic center you choose. Government hospitals offer significantly lower rates than private centers for most of these tests.

When Should You Go for Your Checkup?

Pick a fixed time each year — your birthday is an easy anchor. Book an early morning appointment, fast from the previous night, and get all blood tests done in one visit. Most results come back within 24 hours. Bring your previous year's reports so your doctor can compare trends over time — a rising creatinine or increasing blood sugar over two years tells a different story than a single result in isolation.
