What is a Lipid Profile Test?
A lipid profile (also called a cholesterol panel) is a blood test that measures the levels of different fats in your blood. It includes total cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglycerides. This test is one of the most important tools for assessing your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Why is the Lipid Profile Test Done?
- To screen for high cholesterol, which often has no symptoms but raises heart attack and stroke risk
- To monitor patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity — all risk factors for heart disease
- To evaluate the effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering medications (statins)
- Routine check-up for adults over 35, especially men, and women after menopause
- To assess cardiovascular risk before starting certain medications like oral contraceptives or steroids
Normal Lipid Profile Levels
| Component | Desirable Level |
|---|---|
| Total Cholesterol | Below 200 mg/dL |
| LDL (Bad Cholesterol) | Below 100 mg/dL (optimal) |
| HDL (Good Cholesterol) | Above 40 mg/dL (men), Above 50 mg/dL (women) |
| Triglycerides | Below 150 mg/dL |
These ranges are based on guidelines from the American Heart Association. Higher LDL and lower HDL increase cardiovascular risk. Your doctor may set different target levels based on your personal health history.
How to Prepare for the Lipid Profile Test
- Fast for 9–12 hours before the test — only water is allowed during this period
- Avoid fatty meals, alcohol, and smoking the night before
- Avoid heavy exercise before the test, as it can temporarily alter lipid levels
- Inform your doctor about cholesterol-lowering medications, steroids, or hormone therapy you are taking
- Drink enough water before the blood draw
