What is the Urine R/E Test?
The Urine Routine Examination (Urine R/E), also called urinalysis, is a basic test that analyses the physical, chemical, and microscopic properties of urine. It can detect a wide range of conditions from kidney problems and urinary tract infections to diabetes and liver disease — often before symptoms appear. It is one of the most frequently ordered tests in Bangladesh.
Why is the Urine R/E Test Done?
- To detect urinary tract infections (UTIs) — one of the most common reasons for the test
- To screen for kidney disease or monitor patients with known kidney conditions
- To check for protein or sugar in the urine, which can indicate diabetes or kidney damage
- To investigate symptoms like burning urination, frequent urination, blood in urine, or lower abdominal pain
- Routine pre-operative check-up before surgery
- Monitoring during pregnancy for signs of preeclampsia or gestational diabetes

How to Prepare for the Urine R/E Test
- Collect a midstream clean-catch urine sample — let the first few drops pass, then collect in the container
- The first morning urine is ideal as it is more concentrated, giving more accurate results
- Use the sterile container provided by the lab
- Women should avoid collecting the sample during menstruation if possible
- Deliver the sample to the lab within 1–2 hours of collection
