What is the HbA1c Test?
The HbA1c test (also called glycated haemoglobin or A1c) measures your average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months. Unlike a fasting blood sugar test which shows only one moment in time, HbA1c gives a longer picture of how well blood sugar has been controlled. It is a key test for managing and diagnosing diabetes.
Why is the HbA1c Test Done?
- To diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes
- To monitor how well a diabetic patient's blood sugar is being controlled over time
- To assess the risk of diabetes complications such as kidney disease, nerve damage, and eye problems
- To evaluate whether a diabetes treatment plan needs adjustment
- Recommended every 3–6 months for people with diabetes

How to Prepare for the HbA1c Test
- No fasting is required — you can eat and drink normally before this test
- The test is a simple blood draw from a vein in your arm
