What is the Beta hCG Test?
Beta hCG (Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by the placenta after a fertilised egg implants in the uterus. The Beta hCG blood test measures the level of this hormone in the blood. It is more sensitive than a urine pregnancy test and can detect pregnancy earlier and with greater precision.
Why is the Beta hCG Test Done?
- To confirm pregnancy — especially in early stages or when a urine test result is unclear
- To monitor a high-risk pregnancy or confirm a healthy progression
- To detect and monitor ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus)
- To investigate miscarriage or pregnancy loss — hCG levels that fall instead of rise can indicate a problem
- To screen for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions as part of the first trimester combined test
- To detect certain tumours (such as gestational trophoblastic disease) that produce hCG
Normal Beta hCG Levels
hCG levels vary widely depending on how many weeks pregnant a person is. According to MedlinePlus:
| Pregnancy Week | hCG Level (mIU/mL) |
|---|---|
| Non-pregnant women | Less than 5 mIU/mL |
| 3 – 4 weeks | 9 – 130 mIU/mL |
| 4 – 5 weeks | 75 – 2,600 mIU/mL |
| 5 – 6 weeks | 850 – 20,800 mIU/mL |
| 6 – 7 weeks | 4,000 – 100,200 mIU/mL |
| 8 – 12 weeks | Peaks, then gradually declines |
A single hCG value is less informative than a trend — doctors often repeat the test every 48 hours in early pregnancy to confirm levels are rising normally.
How to Prepare for the Beta hCG Test
- No fasting is required — you can eat and drink normally
- Inform your doctor about any hormone therapy or fertility treatment you are taking, as these can affect results
- The test is a simple blood draw from a vein in your arm
- Results are usually available within a few hours
