What is a Platelet Count Test?
The Platelet Count (PC) test measures the number of platelets in your blood. Platelets are tiny blood cells that play a critical role in clotting — when you bleed, platelets clump together to form a plug and stop the bleeding. The platelet count is routinely included in a Complete Blood Count (CBC), but can also be ordered separately. In Bangladesh, it is most urgently used during dengue fever to monitor disease severity.
Why is the Platelet Count Test Done?
- To monitor dengue fever — platelet count drops progressively in dengue and is the key indicator of severity
- To investigate unexplained bruising, prolonged bleeding, or petechiae (small red spots on skin)
- To diagnose thrombocytopenia (low platelets) from causes such as viral infections, autoimmune conditions, or bone marrow disorders
- To detect thrombocytosis (high platelets) which can increase clotting risk
- To monitor patients on chemotherapy, which commonly suppresses platelet production
- Before surgery, to confirm adequate clotting capacity
Normal Platelet Count
| Status | Platelet Count |
|---|---|
| Normal | 150,000 – 400,000 cells/µL |
| Mild thrombocytopenia | 100,000 – 150,000 cells/µL |
| Moderate thrombocytopenia | 50,000 – 100,000 cells/µL |
| Severe thrombocytopenia | Below 50,000 cells/µL — hospitalisation may be needed |
| Critical (dengue) | Below 20,000 cells/µL — emergency treatment required |
In dengue, a platelet count below 100,000 cells/µL signals the need for close monitoring. Below 20,000 cells/µL carries a risk of spontaneous bleeding. Your doctor will decide on hospitalisation based on the count trend alongside symptoms.
How to Prepare for the Platelet Count Test
- No fasting or special preparation is required
- Inform your doctor about any blood-thinning medications, chemotherapy drugs, or steroids you are taking
- Inform the doctor if you have fever, bleeding tendency, or recent infection
- A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
- In dengue patients, the test is often repeated daily to track the trend
