What is the Serum Testosterone Test?
The serum testosterone test measures the total level of testosterone — the primary male sex hormone — in the blood. While testosterone is produced in much larger amounts in men, women also produce small but important amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands. How to Prepare for the Serum Testosterone Test
- Blood should ideally be collected in the morning between 7–10 AM when testosterone is at its daily peak
- No fasting is strictly required, though some labs recommend it for consistency
- Inform your doctor about any testosterone supplements, anabolic steroids, or hormonal medications you are taking
- Avoid heavy exercise the day before, as intense physical activity temporarily raises testosterone
- A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
