What is the Dengue IgG/IgM Test?

The Dengue IgG/IgM antibody test detects the immune response to dengue virus infection by measuring two types of antibodies — IgM and IgG — in the blood. IgM antibodies appear first, typically from day 4–5 of fever, indicating a current or very recent infection. IgG antibodies develop later and can persist for months to years, indicating a past infection. Together they help determine the timing and nature of dengue exposure.

Why is the Dengue IgG/IgM Test Done?

  • To confirm dengue infection when fever has lasted more than 5 days and the NS1 antigen test window has passed
  • To differentiate between a primary dengue infection (first time) and a secondary infection (repeat) — secondary infections carry a higher risk of severe dengue
  • To investigate fever with body aches, rash, or low platelet count in the dengue season
  • Often ordered alongside NS1 antigen and CBC to complete the dengue diagnostic picture
  • To confirm past dengue exposure in patients being evaluated for recurrent illness

How to Interpret Dengue IgG/IgM Results

IgMIgGInterpretation
PositiveNegativePrimary (first-time) dengue infection — current
PositivePositiveSecondary dengue infection — higher severity risk
NegativePositivePast dengue infection — no active current disease
NegativeNegativeNo dengue antibodies — infection unlikely or too early to detect

A negative result in the first 4 days of fever does not rule out dengue — antibodies may not yet have developed. In that window, the NS1 antigen test is more reliable. Your doctor will interpret serology results alongside NS1, CBC platelet trend, and clinical symptoms.

How to Prepare for the Dengue IgG/IgM Test

  • No fasting is required
  • The test is most reliable from day 5 of fever onwards
  • Inform your doctor about the exact day your fever started — this is critical for correct interpretation
  • Inform the doctor about any previous dengue infection, as prior exposure affects antibody patterns
  • A simple blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm
