What is an MRA of the Brain?

An MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) of the Brain is a specialised MRI technique that produces detailed images of the blood vessels supplying the brain โ€” without requiring a catheter or arterial puncture. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to visualise the arteries and veins of the brain. MRA can detect abnormalities in cerebral blood vessels that standard brain MRI may miss, making it an important tool in stroke prevention and neurovascular diagnosis.

Why is an MRA of the Brain Done?

  • To detect intracranial aneurysms โ€” abnormal bulges in brain arteries that can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding
  • To investigate arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) โ€” abnormal tangles of blood vessels in the brain
  • To evaluate the cause of stroke or TIA (transient ischaemic attack) by identifying narrowed or blocked brain arteries
  • To assess cerebral venous sinus thrombosis โ€” blood clots in the brain's draining veins
  • To screen patients with a family history of brain aneurysms
  • To plan surgery or interventional procedures on brain blood vessels

MRA vs Standard Brain MRI

FeatureStandard Brain MRIMRA of Brain
Best forBrain tissue โ€” tumours, strokes, white matter, infectionsBlood vessels โ€” aneurysms, stenosis, AVMs
Contrast neededSometimesOften done without contrast (TOF technique)

MRA is frequently ordered alongside a standard brain MRI to evaluate both brain tissue and its blood supply in the same session. Together they provide a comprehensive neurovascular assessment.

How to Prepare for an MRA of the Brain

  • No fasting is required for a non-contrast MRA โ€” if contrast is planned, fast for 4 hours beforehand
  • Remove all metal objects โ€” jewellery, hair clips, piercings, and hearing aids must be removed before entering the scan room
  • Inform staff about any pacemaker, cochlear implant, intracranial clips, or other metal implants โ€” these may be incompatible with MRI
  • If contrast is to be used, a serum creatinine test is usually required beforehand to confirm kidney function
  • Avoid makeup and mascara if having a head scan โ€” some cosmetics contain metallic particles
  • If you have claustrophobia, inform the center in advance โ€” sedation can be arranged
