What is a Right Breast Mammogram?
A right breast mammogram is a targeted low-dose X-ray examination focused exclusively on the right breast. It is typically ordered when a clinical concern — such as a lump, nipple change, localised pain, or a previous abnormal finding — is specific to the right breast. Like all mammography, it uses brief compression of the breast tissue between two plates to produce clear X-ray images that allow a radiologist to detect masses, calcifications, and other tissue changes.
Why is a Unilateral Right Mammogram Done?
- To evaluate a palpable lump, localised pain, skin dimpling, or nipple change specific to the right breast
- To investigate right-sided nipple discharge or inversion
- To follow up a specific finding from a previous bilateral mammogram or ultrasound in the right breast
- To assess right breast abnormalities found during a clinical examination
- Post-surgical surveillance in women with prior right breast lumpectomy, mastectomy reconstruction, or radiation

A normal right breast mammogram does not guarantee absence of disease — dense breast tissue reduces mammogram sensitivity. Your radiologist may recommend an ultrasound of the right breast if the mammogram is inconclusive or if you have dense breasts.
How to Prepare for a Right Breast Mammogram
- Do not apply deodorant, powder, perfume, or lotion to the right breast or right underarm on the day of the scan
- Wear a two-piece outfit for easy access to the chest
- Inform the radiographer about any previous surgery, biopsy, implants, or radiation to the right breast
- Bring previous mammogram reports and films for comparison — prior imaging is critical for accurate assessment
- Schedule during the first two weeks of your menstrual cycle if possible — breasts are less tender and tissue is less dense at this time
