What is an Echocardiography?
Echocardiography (echo) is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It uses sound waves to produce real-time moving images of the heart's chambers, valves, walls, and blood flow. It is completely painless and radiation-free. An echo gives cardiologists far more detailed information about the heart's structure and function than an ECG alone, making it one of the most important cardiac investigations available in Bangladesh.
Why is Echocardiography Done?
- To evaluate heart valve conditions — detecting narrowing (stenosis) or leaking (regurgitation) of valves
- To assess heart function and pumping efficiency — the ejection fraction (EF) tells how well the heart pumps
- To diagnose heart failure — a reduced EF confirms systolic heart failure
- To detect fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion) which can compress the heart
- To investigate cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) found on a chest X-ray
- To evaluate congenital heart defects — abnormalities present from birth
- To assess heart function after a heart attack or before cardiac surgery
Key Measurements in an Echo Report
| Measurement | What It Assesses |
|---|---|
| Ejection Fraction (EF) | Pumping efficiency — normal is 55–70% |
| Left Ventricular Size | Chamber enlargement or hypertrophy |
| Valve morphology | Structure and movement of each heart valve |
| Pericardial space | Presence of fluid around the heart |
| Wall motion | Identifies areas of poor movement indicating past heart attack |
An ejection fraction below 40% indicates significantly reduced heart function and usually requires treatment. Between 40–54% is mildly reduced. Above 55% is considered normal. Your cardiologist will interpret all findings together with symptoms and other tests.
How to Prepare for Echocardiography
- No fasting is required for a standard transthoracic echo (the most common type)
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the chest
- Avoid heavy exercise, smoking, and excessive caffeine before the test
- Inform your doctor about all heart or blood pressure medications you take
- Bring previous ECG reports, echocardiography reports, and medical records for comparison
- Stay calm and relaxed during the procedure — it typically takes 20–45 minutes
