What is the Random Blood Sugar Test?
The Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test measures the level of glucose in your blood at any point during the day, regardless of when you last ate. Unlike the fasting blood sugar test, no preparation is needed. It is a quick and convenient way to screen for diabetes or check blood sugar in patients who are already diabetic, particularly when an urgent result is needed.
Why is the Random Blood Sugar Test Done?
- To screen for diabetes when symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained weight loss are present
- To check blood sugar quickly in an emergency โ for example, in a confused or unconscious patient
- To monitor diabetic patients between scheduled fasting tests
- As part of a general health check-up alongside other blood tests
- To evaluate hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) โ dizziness, sweating, and shaking may indicate a dangerously low level
Normal Random Blood Sugar Levels
| Result | Blood Sugar Level (mmol/L) | Blood Sugar Level (mg/dL) |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 7.8 mmol/L | Below 140 mg/dL |
| Impaired / Borderline | 7.8 โ 11.0 mmol/L | 140 โ 199 mg/dL |
| Diabetes (if symptomatic) | 11.1 mmol/L or above | 200 mg/dL or above |
According to WHO guidelines, a random blood sugar of 11.1 mmol/L or above in a patient with classic diabetes symptoms is sufficient to diagnose diabetes. In patients without symptoms, a confirmatory fasting test or HbA1c is usually required.
How to Prepare for the Random Blood Sugar Test
- No preparation is needed โ the test can be done at any time of day
- No fasting is required โ you can eat and drink normally beforehand
- Inform your doctor about any diabetes medications or insulin you are taking
- The test can be done via a finger-prick glucometer at the bedside or a formal blood draw at a lab
