What is the Serum Electrolyte Test?
The serum electrolyte test measures the levels of key minerals — sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate — in your blood. These electrolytes regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, muscle contractions, and the body's acid-base balance. An electrolyte panel is one of the most commonly ordered tests in hospitals and clinics across Bangladesh, particularly for patients who are unwell, dehydrated, or on medications that affect kidney function.
Why is the Serum Electrolyte Test Done?
- To investigate symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, or excessive thirst
- To monitor patients with kidney disease, heart failure, or liver cirrhosis — all conditions that disturb electrolyte balance
- To check the effects of diuretics (water pills), which cause the kidneys to excrete electrolytes
- To assess dehydration from vomiting, diarrhoea, or excessive sweating
- To monitor patients receiving intravenous (IV) fluids or total parenteral nutrition
- Routine part of pre-operative evaluation and hospital admission panels

Low potassium (hypokalaemia) is especially common in patients taking diuretics and can cause dangerous heart rhythm disturbances. How to Prepare for the Serum Electrolyte Test
- No fasting is required for this test
- Stay well hydrated unless your doctor has specifically advised fluid restriction
- Inform your doctor about all medications you take — especially diuretics, blood pressure medicines, steroids, and any IV fluids you have recently received
- Avoid heavy exercise before the test, as intense activity temporarily shifts potassium levels
- A simple blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm
