What is a Pelvic / KUB / Early Pregnancy Ultrasound?
This ultrasound covers three closely related scans done with a full bladder: a pelvic scan examining the uterus and ovaries, a KUB scan (Kidneys, Ureter, Bladder) checking the urinary tract, and an early pregnancy scan confirming a pregnancy in the first trimester. All three use the same preparation and are often ordered together or interchangeably depending on symptoms.
Why is This Ultrasound Done?
- To confirm an intrauterine pregnancy and check for a fetal heartbeat in early pregnancy (typically 6–12 weeks)
- To detect ectopic pregnancy — a pregnancy outside the uterus, which is a medical emergency
- To investigate pelvic pain, irregular periods, or abnormal vaginal bleeding
- To detect ovarian cysts, fibroids, or other uterine abnormalities
- To detect kidney stones, bladder stones, or urinary tract obstruction (KUB scan)
- To evaluate hydronephrosis — swelling of a kidney due to blocked urine flow
What the Results Can Show
| Scan Type | Common Findings Detected |
|---|---|
| Early Pregnancy | Gestational sac, fetal pole, heartbeat, number of embryos, ectopic pregnancy |
| Pelvic (Female) | Ovarian cysts, PCOS appearance, fibroids, uterine polyps, endometrial thickness |
| KUB | Kidney stones, bladder stones, hydronephrosis, bladder wall thickening |
A normal result means no significant structural abnormality was found at the time of the scan. Early pregnancy scans before 6 weeks may not yet show a fetal heartbeat — this does not always indicate a problem.
How to Prepare
- A full bladder is essential — drink 4–5 glasses of water (about 1–1.5 litres) approximately one hour before the scan
- Do not urinate until the scan is complete — a full bladder acts as an acoustic window that improves image quality
- No fasting is required
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to the lower abdomen
- Bring any previous scan reports, pregnancy test results, or referral letter from your doctor
