What is a Whole Abdomen Ultrasound?

A whole abdomen ultrasound (USG) is an imaging test that uses sound waves to create real-time pictures of the organs inside your abdomen. It examines the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and major abdominal blood vessels in a single session. It is painless, radiation-free, and one of the most commonly requested imaging tests in Bangladesh.

Why is a Whole Abdomen Ultrasound Done?

  • To investigate abdominal pain, bloating, or discomfort
  • To detect gallstones, kidney stones, or liver abnormalities such as fatty liver or cirrhosis
  • To screen for abdominal masses, cysts, or tumours
  • To assess organ size and structure — an enlarged liver or spleen can indicate disease
  • To investigate abnormal liver function test (LFT) results
  • To check for fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites)
  • Routine screening as part of a general health check-up

What the Results Show

OrganCommon Findings Detected
LiverFatty liver, cirrhosis, cysts, masses, hepatitis changes
GallbladderGallstones, thickening, polyps, inflammation (cholecystitis)
KidneysKidney stones, cysts, hydronephrosis, size changes
PancreasEnlargement, cysts, pancreatitis changes
SpleenSplenomegaly (enlargement), cysts

A normal ultrasound report means no significant structural abnormalities were found on the day of the scan. It does not completely rule out all conditions — some early-stage diseases may not yet be visible on ultrasound.

How to Prepare for a Whole Abdomen Ultrasound

  • Fast for 6–8 hours before the scan — an empty stomach reduces bowel gas and gives clearer images of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
  • Water is usually allowed during fasting, but avoid carbonated drinks
  • You may be asked to have a moderately full bladder — drink water about 30–60 minutes before arrival if your doctor advises
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen
  • Bring any previous ultrasound reports or relevant test results for comparison
