What is a Chest X-Ray (PA View)?
A chest X-ray in the PA (Posteroanterior) view is the standard chest imaging test where X-rays pass from the back of the body to the front, with the patient standing facing the detector. It produces a clear image of the lungs, heart, ribs, and major blood vessels in a single exposure. It is one of the most frequently performed medical imaging tests in Bangladesh and worldwide.
Why is a Chest X-Ray Done?
- To investigate persistent cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath
- To detect pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), or other lung infections — TB screening is particularly important in Bangladesh
- To assess heart size — an enlarged heart shadow on X-ray can indicate heart failure or cardiomegaly
- To detect pleural effusion — fluid accumulation around the lungs
- To screen for lung nodules or masses that may need further investigation
- Routine pre-operative chest assessment before surgery or anaesthesia
- Required for visa medicals, job medicals, and employment health certificates
What a Chest X-Ray Can Show
| Finding | Possible Condition |
|---|---|
| White patches in lung fields | Pneumonia, TB, fluid |
| Enlarged heart shadow | Heart failure, cardiomegaly |
| Blunting of costophrenic angle | Pleural effusion (fluid around lungs) |
| Hyperinflated lungs | COPD, emphysema, asthma |
| Normal chest X-ray | Does not rule out all lung or heart conditions |
How to Prepare for a Chest X-Ray
- No fasting or special preparation is required
- Remove all jewellery, chains, bras with metal hooks, and any metal objects from the chest area before the X-ray
- Inform the technician if you are pregnant or may be pregnant — a lead apron will be used for protection
- Wear comfortable clothing; you may be asked to change into a hospital gown
- You will be asked to take a deep breath and hold it briefly during image capture — this gives clearer lung images
